I suppose it should come as no surprise that artificial food dyes are toxic. But they are in almost every processed food we find at the grocery store. It is so common to see them in the list of ingredients that most people don’t even think about it. But why should we willingly feed ourselves and, even worse, our children such dangerous chemicals?
In a paper presented by The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), it was stated that dyes used in processed foods (cereals, candy, juices, etc) can cause allergic reactions, hyperactivity, and even cancer. ”These synthetic chemicals do absolutely nothing to improve the nutritional quality or safety of foods, but trigger behavior problems in children and, possibly, cancer in anybody,” Michael F. Jacobson, executive director of the nonprofit group, said in a written statement. “The Food and Drug Administration should ban dyes, which would force industry to color foods with real food ingredients, not toxic petrochemicals.”
The most commonly used dyes in America are contaminated with cancer-causing substances. And you might be consuming them. Have you spotted any of these in your pantry?
You should look at their report .
Despite that most artificial dyes have been banned in other countries, big food companies like General Mills and surprise, surprise Coca Cola are constantly pushing to keep this toxic chemicals in our food. An article in Forbes magazine, about the potential dangers of artificial coloring, touches lightly on the matter.
Artificial food dyes have been linked to ADD, hyperactivity , tumors and cancer. They are also highly allergenic, a very common malady in our children these days. Still we consume this colorful cocktail of toxics on a regular basis! A lot of the items in your grocery cart (drinks, popsicles, yogurts, mac-cheese, baking mixes, processed meats, sauces, chips, etc) contain these artificial colorings. Some of these items might even be marketed as healthy!
